Role Overview

As a mechanical Engineer at Geodrones Australia, you will be responsible for the design, manufacture, manufacturing plan and execution of structures mechanical systems found within aircraft and UAVs. Suitable mechanical analysis will be required, including, but not limited to:

  • Torque and thrust calculations
  • Deflection, stress and strain within structural members
  • Optimisation of structural members including weight reduction
  • Corrosion prevention considerations

Additional knowledge of gear and gearbox design, in addition to powertrain systems – electrical and mechanical (ICE) are sought after.

Further to this, validation of structural designs will be required to be verified using a range of FEA/CFD software suites available. Training of these software suites is available to enhance your capability and optimise your workflow. Once validated, you will be responsible for the manufacture of these parts, in-house or outsourced including procurement of materials and communication with manufacturers.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering documentation necessary for the transition from development to production including manufacturing processes, standards, assembly procedures, test procedures, standard operating procedures, bills of materials, suitable alternate parts lists and mechanical drawings
  • Preparing documentation for proposals and tenders
  • Overseeing manufacturing equipment, machinery and material selection
  • Update designs when necessary, in response to manufacturing issues, parts/material obsolescence, and system requirement changes
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts of established product to reduce issues, decrease manufacturing time, and lower costs
  • Perform structured root cause analysis of in-process failures
  • Perform hands-on engineering and liaison role with the design teams
  • Contribute to design reviews acting as an expert in design for manufacturability, design for testability, yield improvements, supplier capabilities assessments, quality control, etc.
  • Communication with external stakeholders for procurement and supply chain logistics

Requirements

  • 1+ years’ experience working in an engineering or manufacturing space
  • Mechanical engineering theory and application
  • Materials engineering theory and application
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with CAD for part design and documentation
  • Ability to work effectively within various sized teams
  • Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated success working in a dynamic environment with multiple priorities

Desired

  • Experience with manual and CNC machining equipment
  • Experience with FEA software (ANSYS or Altair)
  • Composite material theory and failure modes
  • Formula SAE Electric/Solar car and/or Rocketry Team experience
  • AGSVA Security Clearance – Baseline (or ability to achieve)
